We help charities and good brands attract support so they can do more good.

The Word Lab is a boutique communications consultancy with a big heart. We work with charities and brands who make a difference across Canterbury.

Whether you’re an emerging start-up looking to change the world, a not-for profit with amazing stories just waiting to be shared, or a larger organisation doing good in your community - we can help you connect with the people that matter and maximise your impact.

As strategic communicators, our talent lies in understanding the people you serve and how you can best engage with them. We’ll help you start conversations with the right people, by sharing your story in the right places.

Our work starts with developing a communications strategy to set a solid foundation before taking your message to the market. We then ensure your content is crafted for maximum appeal – always putting your audience first. Finally, we give your brand a boost through smart storytelling across a variety of channels, including blogging, e-newsletters, case studies, media articles and more.

Our aim is to help you raise your brand awareness, profile your good work, and attract support and business - so you can ultimately do more good.

We enjoy working with good people who share our down-to-earth values and care as much about our community as we do. If you’re looking for a skilled consultancy to support your organisation, brand, project or event, we’d love to work with you.

Strategic focus

Experience has taught us that all successful communications and marketing activity begins with a strategic approach. Whether we’re writing a series of articles or launching a campaign to support fundraising, we’ll first develop a clear understanding of your organisation or brand and then recommend a course of action that will have the most impact within your budget.

Collaborative style

We’re well-versed in working with small and large teams to implement new initiatives and can partner with you to offer the level of support you need. This might involve providing strategic communications advice and specialist support to your in-house team, or taking the lead on planning and delivering an entire campaign from start to finish.

Specialist partners

While our talented team is small, we have strong relationships with a variety of local specialists who we have hand-picked for their community focus. Our network includes website developers, graphic designers, photographers, videographers, printers, social media gurus and digital marketers. We're also very happy to work closely with your chosen providers.

The Word Lab was born out of my desire to see not-for-profits, social enterprise initiatives and good brands flourish in Canterbury.

My background in public relations and marketing includes working with not-for-profits, start-ups, social enterprises and organisations in the education, health, disability and community sectors. I’ve also volunteered to help charities throughout my career and continue to consult pro-bono.

A unique cocktail of creativity and practicality, I enjoy pushing boundaries and working with clients to come up with out-of-the-box solutions. My strengths lie in developing and implementing communications and marketing strategies, as well as producing highly-engaging content.

I have a Bachelor of Communication in Communication Management and Journalism, with a minor in Expressive Arts, and a Postgraduate Diploma in Business and Administration, with Merit in Communication Management.

Kirsten Wick

Communications Consultant

I joined The Word Lab because I was impressed with the emphasis placed on supporting businesses doing good and not-for-profit organisations.

I have more than 15 years’ experience in communications, public relations and marketing, including ten years in-agency experience. Over this time I have worked with a wide range of organisations, including sole trader start-ups, not-for-profits, community groups and large international organisations.

My key strength is writing - from in-depth research articles to business profiles and website copy, I love the craft of story-telling.

Experience has shown me that regardless of the size, industry, type of organisation, or marketing spend, at the heart of every successful business is effective communication – crafting the right message, to appeal and engage the right people, at the right time, in the right way.

I have a Bachelor of Arts in English, a Post Graduate Diploma in Business Management, and a Bachelor of Commerce (Hons).
